There was a time when practically every middle and high school student in Korea seemed to wear a North Face puffer, while mothers in Gangnam appeared in Moncler jackets. By contrast, as those born in the 2000s have entered adulthood, what seems increasingly characteristic is a desire to seek out rarer things and cultivate a style of their own rather than simply follow trends. This tendency can be found in Kang Chaena’s paintings. If the melting pot was a world in which standing out meant sticking out, the salad bowl—where each ingredient retains its own flavor and color—is a world that seeks precisely what makes each of us distinct. As access to information has expanded and production diversified, tastes have fragmented into smaller groups and ultimately become layered within the individual.

In this exhibition, Kang places side by side things, people, places, and states selected from her everyday world: family, friends, part-time jobs, her companion animal 〈Duboo〉, clothes, vintage objects, music, signs, video calls, mental health, and gender-neutral figures. Small and personal things gather to form a portrait of herself and, perhaps, of others of her generation. Images appear without hierarchy, as though a list of tastes could itself constitute an identity. There are no pedestals here. You are meant to enter her room barefoot, sniff around, and peer closely at all the little things. Trying on the Chrome Hearts cap hanging near the ventilation fan is another way to experience the exhibition.

The generation reflected in Kang’s work lives with an immense volume of information and constant exposure to the judgment of others, yet it does not simply idolize popular culture. Having grown up within an environment saturated with media, they absorb and rearrange it in their own ways, filtering out what does not matter and searching for what feels distinctly theirs. They delve into vintage things, collect LPs, and bring faded or once-niche cultural fragments back into the present. Childhood memories and fantasies, images of unaffordable things found in overseas online shops, legendary performance footage, rare fashion and music—all become ingredients in Kang’s salad.

〈I’M NOKAY〉 contains the courage to say, “I’m not okay.” The Sweet Trip lyrics in 〈Chocolate Matter〉 evoke the practice of trusting oneself and the courage to grow, while 〈I can’t do anything〉 finds wisdom in submerging two clenched fists in cold water to calm one’s emotions. The protagonists of 〈Supa Salad Bowl〉 are vintage T-shirts the artist wishes she could own, laid out like goods on a blanket at a flea market. A monkey printed on one of them later reappears as a doll perched on her paint containers. The painting is titled 〈Holy break〉; perhaps this time the doll has become the artist herself.

Kang is not trying to compile a definitive archive of her tastes. She paints what she likes, leaves parts behind when they no longer feel right, and fills the rest with other tastes and emotional states. She searches for things that suit her palate, digs up what others have passed over, and sometimes ventures deep into a particular territory. Aphex Twin’s 〈Windowlicker〉 is one such trace of looking at herself looking—at rare fashion, online images, and objects of desire she wants but cannot necessarily possess.

Whenever I visited her studio, Kang would hand me a ziplock bag filled with her favorite snacks. This time, she has put her tastes into a salad bowl. Like finding crumbled cheese or tiny red peppercorns between leaves of romaine, there is pleasure in discovering a discarded sock or a little notebook tucked here and there throughout the exhibition.
